We recently celebrated our 10 Anniversary in Kennebunkport, Maine. You can read all about that fabulous trip here. Although we did miss our kids a little, we did really appreciate getting away (from them) for a while. We also came away with a couple of realizations:
5: We don’t do this enough.
Jeesh. Who couldn’t use a 3 day mini vaca? It’s so darn hard to do. But you really, really should make every effort to take a long weekend, heck, even an overnighter with your spouse or partner and get away from those kiddos for a while. You need your batteries recharged. You need to be yourself and not be a role of “mom” for a bit. Been thinking of getting away, but keep coming up with excuses? Like Nike says, JUST DO IT.
4: We don’t eat lobster enough.
If you’ve never had lobster, we can’t be friends anymore. JK. We can be friends, but I’ll just be judging you the whole time. We happened to be in Maine, THE place for lobster. Naturally, we ate it. Like a lot. It was so darn good. My DH had a lobster roll, which I actually think is totally disgusting. Think tuna fish sandwich, but instead of tuna, it’s lobster chunks. Not my cup of tea. What is my cup of tea? Lobster, drizzled with butter and squirted with lemon. That shits good.
3: I really love the ocean.
We’re lucky enough to live in a place where I can put my feet in the sand and touch the ocean waves in 10 minutes if I wanted to. I walk out my door and smell salty air every morning. It makes me happy. I spent a few hours with a book, a bag of Combos, and a root beer at the Kennebunk beach, and it was just what the doctor ordered. The weather was perfect. The air was perfect. And I couldn’t help but wonder if anyone would realize if I went pee in the ocean. Because I had to go, really bad.
2: Pumpkin beer needs to have a sugar/cinnamon rim.
Our vacation landed in prime pumpkin beer season. I was excited when I rolled up to a Kennebunk bar and they had pumpkin beer. I asked for the rim, and they did it. But there was no sugar, just cinnamon. It didn’t really do it for me. I mean, I’m here on my kid-free vacation. I want the freaking pumpkin beer with a cinnamon AND sugar rim. Is that so hard? Oh, and all you sickies who can drink pumpkin beer with NO rim (aka, my husband)…eye roll. Major eye roll. If you LOVE pumpkin beers as much as we do, stop by Shipyard’s Facebook page and give them a shout out!
1: As much as it’s great to get away. It’s even greater to come back.
Like I’ve said, this vacation had it all. Time to ourselves, great food and drinks, a ton of new memories made and to top it off, (something I didn’t expect in Maine in September) awesome weather. But walking in the door after not seeing our kids for three days was pretty special. Did we love seeing their faces yell “mommy” and “daddy” as we came through the front door? Yes! Did we miss them? For sure. Did we get over it 10 minutes later when they starting bickering with each other over a toy? Damn straight.
When was the last time you went on a vacation with your spouse? Tell us now on our Facebook page. We’d love to hear from you.
